Reflux Advice
Typical symptoms of Reflux

  •  Crying in pain
  • Discomfort when feeding (arching, screaming, refusal, turning away)
  • Fussiness
  • Runny nose, snuffles
  • Frequent vomiting or spitting up
  • Foul breath (smells acidic like vinegar)
  • Chronic CoughNight-time cough
  • Poor sleep habits, frequent waking
  • Wet burps
  • Frequent hiccups
  • Comfort feeding- constant feeding to alleviate pain
  • Food intolerances
  • Hoarse voice, sore throat
  • Poor Weight gain
  • Recurring ear infections

Reflux and intolerances are common together. Sickness can be minimised by adding a thickener, using a 'comfort' pre-thickened formula or infant Gaviscon (this is not the same as the adult type, merely a thickener which is seaweed based, this forms a gel layer over food in tummy thus minimising regurgitation)

The acid reflux problem can be addressed by having medication prescribed, most commonly Ranitidine (Zantac) Domperidone (for sickness and to empty stomach contents faster) Lansoprazole or Omeprazole. These neutralise the acid problem which is caused by an immature valve allowing the acid to escape. They are PPI's (protein pump inhibitors)

Should an intolerance be suspected you may be advised to trial a soya based formula, a partially hydrolysed formula (proteins partly broken down) or a hypo allergenic variety which is synthetic with no proteins. I had it explained to me in the terms of the ordinary formula being like a string of pearls, partially hydrolysed being like individual pearls (making it a bit easier to digest through gut) and hypo allergenic containing no pearls, this made sense to me!
